Ecovolunteer nature travel: help in mangrove conservation in Thailand. The Mangrove Conservation Project started in the summer of 2002. It is run by an Italian NGO ( Naucrates ) in collaboration with the Ranong Coastal Resources Research Center. As the mangrove forest on the island has never been surveyed by experts before, in the first season of work we focus on collection of information on which a conservation strategy plan can be based. In the biological portion of the study, we will determine the species of mangroves in the tidal creek near our resort, take measures to describe the community structure and zonation, and made preliminary observations of the fauna. Our restoration activities include the establishment of a mangrove nursery and a revegetation experiment. In the mapping portion of the project, we will map the mangrove vegetation zones of the island using GIS and remote sensing techniques. In support of our education and community goals, we prepare teaching materials on mangroves and visit the three schools on the island, together with our Thai collaborators. We also prepare posters and leaflets to inform the resort guests about the mangroves of the island. mangroves, habitat restoration, mangrove restoration, swamp, saltmarsh, mangrove ecosystem, wetland protection, red mangrove, black mangrove, white mangrove, avicenna germinas, rhizophora, halophyte, propagules, rhizophera, avicennia, roots of the sea, revegetation, estuary, naucrates, nature travel, ecotourism
