Greyhounds rescue in Spain - Galgos espanoles
The lovely and elegant greyhounds of Spain are the Galgos espaņoles, and they are traditionally bred and used for hunting. Outside the hunting season these fast, elegant dogs become a liability to their owners and for that reason many are dumped. THOUSANDS of these gentle, and often young greyhounds all over Spain are annually discarded and perish horribly. They are killed by hanging. They are thrown into deep wells. They are even set fire. On other occasions acid from batteries is poured over them. Most galgos are killed in the triangle Valladolid-Salamanca-Toledo. Our sanctuary Scooby is THE rescue center for these greyhounds and therefore it is located close to the centre of the killing fields, and it is at this very centre that things are beginning to change. The galgueros (hunters) in the area are starting to bring in the dogs they don't need any more. We now house several hundreds of dogs. The shelter consists of an old building and many fields surrounded by fences; it is financed by foreigners. Through supporting organisations for animal welfare most dogs eventually go to other European countries and the United States, where greyhounds are considered to be a pet. We intend additionally to set up an educational centre, that will hopefully set an altogether different example for the future. Please join us at our centre, as we urgently need both your helping hands and money to care for our dogs and to help end these horrific practices.
