Corncrakes in Poland. Participate in the re-naturalisation of a river valley in the Bieszczady National Park and the conservation of corncrakes in this area! The enigmatic corncrake is globally threatened, and both in Poland and western Europe it is a scarce breeding species. In western and central Europe the numbers have drastically and rapidly declined, in eastern Europe corncrakes are still numerous. For the Bieszczady mountains the real number and tendencies of the species are not known, though the area is classified as one of the main refuge for corncrakes in Poland. Some research and count calling of males in the year 2000 suggests this area to be one of the highest density in Poland with 20 calling males per 100 hectare. Now we are to collect data about the population in the Upper San River. With the results the national park hopes to show that the valley is an important refuge for corncrakes and that protection of this area is necessary.
