Ecovolunteer nature travel: help in conservation of kiwis & kokakos in New Zealand. The Kiwi and the Kokako are unique to New Zealand and can be found nowhere else in the world. This is your opportunity to help re-establish the species and ensure their survival - a chance to really make a difference! The Kiwi bird is the national symbol of New Zealand easily recognised around the world - New Zealanders are affectionately known as ‘kiwis’. Unfortunately Kiwi numbers are extremely low and the species is now under threat of extinction. The Kokako is perhaps less well known, but the native forests would be a sadder place without its distinctive call, should the species become extinct. Fewer than 400 pairs survive today. This project takes place by working in conjunction with the New Zealand government’s Department of Conservation to address the problem through the rearing, tracking and monitoring of birds, and re-introducing them into the bush and also by tackling the root cause of the problem with predator control. new zealand, kiwi, apteryx, kokako, callaeas, ornithology, birdwatching, birding, avitourism, monitoring, nature travel, ecotourism
