Blue ducks, Whio in New Zealand, Aotearoa, Hymenolaimus malacorhynchus
The plight of the vulnerable and unique Blue duck or Whio is a critical one. Blue ducks have been classified as nationally endangered in New Zealand, with a further decline in their population predicted. And they do not live anywhere outside of New Zealand. Dan and Louise have privately initiated this conservation project which aims to protect the existing population, spread the public awareness of their critical situation, and while doing so look after our other native species, flora and fauna abundant in this area. Luckily we have the full support of the Department of Conservation who have also recognized that in this area there is a chance to make a difference to the survival of the Blue Duck. We offer you a unique experience in making a difference. You will experience close encounters with this rare species and be surrounded by beautiful and lush native bush while learning about conservation in New Zealand.
