You will be kayaking, trekking or feeding otters, while participating in biological field research on river otters on an attractive island in the south of Brazil. In this research you will be monitoring in the field for all kinds of traces of river otters and their activities, in the wild and in captivity. The main objective of the project is to increase the knowledge of river otters and their preservation in Brazil. You may join for anything from one week to several months for hands-on participation in field research and conservation work. Social work is also a focus on the project. The project runs a small school for children, with classes once a week. The island where the project is based is well known for its natural beauties with wonderful beaches and opportunities for surfing, sailing and scuba diving. This otter project Projeto Lontra offers you the opportunity to participate in biological field research on Southamerican otters. The main objective of Projeto Lontra is to increase the knowledge of the species and its preservation in Brazil. You will integrate in a friendly and productive atmosphere. Your activities will vary and include analysis of the otter’s frequency at the shelters, monitoring of nests, ethological studies and food habits. Most of your work is fieldwork, but also some laboratory analysis is involved. Although based at Piri Lake, you will be able to make short visits to the other study areas. You will be accompanied by an experienced project-researcher. Your activities include treks through the Atlantic Forest, dunes, use of canoes and kayaks, and nocturnal observations.
