Giant otters in Bolivia - Pteronura brasiliensis
Ecovolunteer nature travel: help in giant otter research in Bolivia.
This project is part of the national giant otter survey in Bolivia. In 2006, emphasis is given to the northeastern part of Bolivia, a largely unknown area of a bewildering beauty, the size of France (Iténez river basin). We are aiming at the development of a Bolivian national conservation strategy for the endangered giant otter. Standardized and actualized distribution data for the species will be a main tool during conservation planning. Besides, we are conducting research on the competition between giant otters and fishermen and on the diet and the ethology of giant otters. Simultaneously, we conduct research on black caiman, tiger catfish, and on the Bolivian freshwater dolphin (lately recognized as a new species). Should you have special interest in these aquatic groups then please inform the local team beforehand. Also we run an awareness raising and information campaign in areas where otters are abundant. The fieldwork with you allows us to explore some of the most bio-diverse regions of the world and protect the local aquatic bio-diversity. You will contribute to the development of rules for responsible tourism, the formation of guides, and community work. Please join and help us and at the same time enjoy the wildlife in an area of a stunning beauty, as yet not (and hopefully never) discovered by mass tourism! All your activities are aiming directly at low-term and long-term conservation of the giant otter.
